Spice Up Your Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Are you ready to kick off summer with a Cinco de Mayo celebration? Cinco de Mayo is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Mexican food and culture. Who doesn’t love the incredible flavors, vibrant colors, and festive music associated with a Cinco De Mayo celebration? On Cinco de Mayo, Mexican culture spreads all over America for good reasons.

Why Do We Celebrate Cinco De Mayo?

When Mexican forces won the 1862 Battle of Puebla, an unlikely defeat if you check your history books, this was a morale boost for Mexican forces and became an annual celebration in Puebla and its surrounding states. Now it’s celebrated in Mexico and the United States!

Cinco de Mayo Necessities

Now that we know why we celebrate, let’s discuss the necessities for a fabulous Cinco De Mayo celebration. The Cinco de Mayo holiday is centered around fabulous Mexican fare and, of course, margaritas or cervezas! However, if you aren’t a drinker, agua fresca also pairs just as nicely with Mexican cuisine and is easy to make. Just mix fruit, water, a little lime juice, and sweeteners. You can also find a great selection of Mexican sodas at Cash Saver.

One of the best parts about throwing a Cinco de Mayo celebration is that making an entire Mexican feast is typically easy and affordable. If you don’t want to spend time cooking, guests can still fill up on Mexican snacks and finger foods. At Cash Saver, we have an abundant selection of the ingredients you need to make a feast and plenty of snacks and finger foods that fit the Cinco de Mayo vibe. Additionally, all our items are sold at a fraction of the price of other grocery stores, so you can stock up without breaking the bank. To help you prepare for your party, here is a sample grocery list and a few recipes to help you achieve a party your guests will remember for years to come.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration Grocery List

At Cash Saver, we pride ourselves on helping our community shop locally by offering our customers their favorite local products. Many of the local items we sell would be perfect for your celebration. Some of the local Mexican-inspired items we sell include the popular restaurant Las Delicias’ chips, guacamole, salsa, and margarita mix. We also sell Pancho’s and Arbo’s cheese dips and salsas, as well as many local craft beers such as High Cotton’s Mexican Lager. Speaking of beer, we are also well known for our vast beer selection, so you’ll also find other Mexican beers such as Negro Modelo, Corona, or Tecate at great prices.

Snack Food Items for Your Grocery List

  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Cheese dip
  • Chips
  • Quesadillas: You will need tortillas, cheese (ideally a Mexican cheese such as cotija), and, if you prefer, a type of meat such as chicken, beef, or carne asada for the stuffing.
  • Churros: You can now purchase these delectable treats already made!
  • Cinnamon Crisps: Again, you can find these already pre-packaged in the chip aisle, or you can easily make your own by cutting flour tortillas into chip size, frying them in butter, and once cooled, simply adding sugar and cinnamon.

Mexican Cuisine Grocery List

Feel free to keep it simple with fajitas or tacos, but if you want to elevate your food selection, here are a few other items your guests will surely enjoy. The dishes we have chosen are elote, tostados, and shrimp ceviche. Each of these dishes is extremely easy to make and affordable.

Shrimp Ceviche

  • Cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp
  • Lime juice
  • A small amount of orange juice
  • Tomatoes
  • Fresh jalapenos
  • Red Onion
  • Cilantro
  • Jicama (a Mexican fruit usually near the coconuts or cantaloupes)

Marinate your shrimp in the liquids. Dice up and mix the other ingredients and serve the shrimp on the side. You could also offer chips to go alongside the shrimp ceviche.

Elote, Also Known as Mexican Street Corn

  • Fresh corn on the cob
  • Mayonnaise
  • Chili powder
  • Lime juice
  • Cotija cheese
  • Cilantro

Grill your corn on the cob. Once it cools, smother it on all sides with the mayonnaise, then add a touch of lime juice and sprinkle the chili powder, cotija, and cilantro onto the corn.

Tostados

  • Fried corn tortillas
  • Refried beans
  • Ground beef, chicken, or pork
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Sour cream

This might be one of the easiest of all recipes. Once you cook the meat of your choice and the refried beans, spread them on the tortilla and then layer them with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and a dab of sour cream. Of course, you can also serve this vegetarian style by excluding the meat.
